X-rays are pretty familiar to anyone who has seen a medical drama, or indeed pretty much any television show or film. What you may not know is the process behind them and how that process can be improved upon. This is something that NMC is offering with its digital radiography system (also referred to as DR).

The difference

The main difference between DR and the more traditional form of X-ray is in how the image is processed. The more traditional style involves a cassette that then goes into a reader and this then resulted in the digital image that people see when they are shown an X-ray.

The problem with this process is that it can take time, so you end up having to wait while the image is being converted. With the digital process, a flat panel detector does the processing, cutting out the conversion element.

What this means is that your results can be sent electronically much quicker and the imagery is a lot clearer. This also means that potential issues can be spotted a lot quicker and you spend less time having to be exposed to X-rays (while this is something that has to be done, the exposure does carry risks which we wish to avoid as much as humanly possible).
