Have you or anyone you know been recently diagnosed with astigmatism. This vision problem is one of the least understood and many people really have no idea what it is. The truth is, astigmatism is common and it can be corrected with laser eye surgery. Let’s take a closer look at this condition to give you a better understanding of astigmatism and what you can do about it.
What is Astigmatism?
Some people believe that astigmatism is a serious medical condition like glaucoma or other diseases, but this is not the case. Astigmatism is a condition which affects the way the eye lens refracts or bends light. In other words, you can’t properly focus on something. Light does not enter your retina from the proper angle and this can distort or blur vision. In addition, you may find the need to squint often and you could experience frequent headaches or eye strain.
Types of Astigmatism
There are three basic types which can be corrected with eye surgery but without going into great detail, here is a simple explanation. Astigmatism causes the eyes to lose their focal point in two different areas and can be:
- Myopic – astigmatism resulting in a nearsighted condition. This causes the eyes to focus too soon.
- Hyperopic – farsightedness caused by astigmatism. Your eyes focus too late.
- Mixed – a combination of both hyperopic and myopic.
Correcting Astigmatism
There are three ways astigmatism can be corrected these days:
- Eyeglasses
- Contact lenses
- Laser eye surgery
If you opt for surgery, there is more than one procedure possible. When you see your surgeon he or she will perform extensive testing to confirm your condition. You will also be tested to see if you are good candidate for surgery and to determine which type of procedure is safest and most effective for you.
