Liposuction is an incredibly popular procedure in the United States and a growing number of areas around the world. The process involves the precise, surgical removal of excess fat deposits in the body, leading to a slimmer, more contoured look. If you’re interested in liposuction surgery but aren’t sure what to expect when it comes to recovery, here’s everything you need to know to calm your fears and prepare for your procedure:
The First Two Weeks
As with any medical procedure, the period immediately following your procedure will be the most difficult regarding discomfort. You will need to wear compression garments or bandages and might have drains leading from existing incision areas that will assist in ridding your body of excess blood or fluid that can cause swelling. Tending to these and monitoring for infection will be top priorities at this time.
While your weight loss practitioner will provide pain medication, compression bandages, and recommend or prescribe any other essentials, your care will largely be in your own hands or that of an at-home provider. Most patients prefer this, however, as you’re able to slowly ease back into your typical daily routines as you rest and allow your body to heal.
Weeks 2-4
The second phase of liposuction recovery begins around two weeks post-procedure. At this time, you will notice that discomfort is much more manageable, and you can proceed with normal activities much more freely. Most people resume working at this time if they have taken an extended leave, and all but the most athletic can return to normal physical activity. Listen to your body if you need to slow down at any point – remember, you are a work in progress! No sense in rushing perfection!
Weeks 4-6
Congratulations, you are nearly finished with your liposuction recovery! At this point, bruising and discomfort should be a thing of the past, though some patients do still notice some swelling after a month. Still, results should be clearly visible now, and as you continue to recover you will continue to see more defined contours and a slimmer, more beautiful you!
