Panchakarma: What is it?

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word which means ‘five actions.’ It is a process designed to eliminate any toxic buildup left by disease, stress, poor nutrition and any other factors that cause an imbalance in the body.

Normally, the body is equipped with mechanisms to get rid of toxins. However, aging and the damage to organs and systems brought about by poor nutrition, unhealthy practices, genetic predisposition and disease can disrupt the elimination process and cause a buildup of toxic waste matter, called ama, which leads to imbalance in dosha or energy.

Panchakarma is designed to restore the balance of dosha by eliminating harmful ama from the system through natural channels such as the sweat glands, colon, gall bladder, the urinary tract and the mouth. This is done through specialized nutrition, massages oil baths, oral and nasal administration of traditional medicine, among others. Like other forms of Ayurvedic therapies, Panchakarma is administered by trained therapists according to a definite sequence. These therapists are trained to observe and manage any discomfort associated with the release of toxins to make each experience as comfortable and safe as possible.

A body free from ama or any toxic buildup is the foundation of health and well-being, where energy, information, and nourishment are free to flow. Restoration is not limited to physiological processes, however. The Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment also frees up mental and emotional channels for clarity, mindfulness, and improved resilience against stress. Toxic emotions and thoughts, such as pent-up anger, sadness, and guilt are eliminated in the course of treatment to produce an overall improvement in well being.
